Delhi to Kedarnath yatra –Time, Routes and Travel Guide

Kedarnath, one of the pilgrimage destinations in India, which is in Garhwal Himalayas. Mainly for the Hindu devotees going to this place is a dream to come true. The whole journey takes place with devotion, spiritual energy and the holy of Lord Shiva. If you are thinking of taking a trip to Kedarnath then this guide is for you.

Distance & Travel Duration  

The kilometers from Delhi to Kedarnath is all over 452 kilometers. And from all this distance you can cover 436 kilometers from roads with your own vehicle. Either through bus, your own car or through train. Rest the remaining 18 kilometers is covered by trekking.  

Delhi → Haridwar → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar → Augustmuni → Sonprayag → Gaurikund → Kedarnath

The journey you cover by road will take you around 11 to 12 hours and the trekking distance would be depending upon how you cover it.  

Routes   

There are various routes to cover and reach Kedarnath but from Delhi there are 2 main routes which you can cover get to your destination. Let us discuss both the routes one by one.  

Route via Haridwar / Rishikesh

Delhi-Haridwar-Rishikesh-Devprayag-Srinagar-Rudraprayag-Guptkashi-Sonprayag-Gaurikund-Kedarnath  

You can cover the distance from Delhi to Gaurikund from your own vehicle car, bus, bike etc and from Gaurikund your trek would start which is steep and a challenging route.  

Route via Dehradun

Delhi-Dehradun-Tehri-Srinagar-Rudraprayag-Guptkashi-Sonprayag-Gaurikund-Kedarnath  

The same trek locations would be there in this route as well. From Gaurikund to Kedarnath. In this route your trek would be of 16 kilometers.  

By Air

The airport accessed for visiting Kedarnath shrine operates from Jolly Grant Airport (DED) located in Dehradun.

Those starting their journey from Dehradun can access Sonprayag by car and later decide between walking or taking helicopter service to Kedarnath.

Visitors can use helicopter transfers from three different points located at Phata and Guptkashi and Sirsi to get to Kedarnath.

Best Timing to Visit  

The ideal time to visit Kedarnath is from May to October. In this duration temples are open and the weather is also pleasant. These factors make your trek easier as in off-season excessive snowfall makes it tough for you to trek.  

Accommodation  

You have several options to stay, take rest and recharge yourself. The staying options are available in Gaurikund (from where your trek starts), Sonprayag and the rest are also available in between trek.  

Health  

Before going for trek remember to check on your health. Consult your doctor as well before going to the trek so that you don’t face any issues on your trip. Because many people face difficulties in breathing, experiences chest pain and many more issues. And take some medicines because many people suffer with fever and pain. 

Packings  

Do carry warm clothes, trekking shoes, raincoat, first aid kit, snacks, water bottle, flashlight, trek backpack with you so that you don’t get stuck anywhere due to lack of any stuff.  

Things to keep in mind 

 ● As instructed by the Uttarakhand government, it is necessary for every traveler to do bio-metric registration. This is available online as well. Alternatively, you may also do the same at Sonprayag. 

● You can easily find mules & porters to accompany you on your journey. Do remember to check the prices officially posted so as to avoid paying a larger sum. 

● Also, if you are hiring porters or mule owner - remember to check their official IDs

● Photography is not allowed in the temple premises. Be mindful of the fact and abide by the rules of the temple authorities.

● It is always wise to avoid the hilly terrain in the monsoon season. Especially given the tragedy of 2013, and how badly Kedarnath was hit. If you are still heading there in the monsoon period – do check with officials and local authorities then decide.
